The New Directions Program, delivered by Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service, supports the healthy growth and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families in our community.

Our program provides culturally safe, family-centred allied health services in Wellington, helping children get the right support at the right time and ensuring continuity of care as they grow.

Our experienced team includes:

  • Maternal and Infant Nurse
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Speech Pathologist
  • Dietitian
  • Aboriginal Health Workers

Together, we work closely with families to support children’s development, wellbeing, and nutrition in a supportive and culturally respectful environment.

Who the program supports:

  • Children 0–5 years for Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology
  • Children 0–16 years and their mothers for Dietetics services

To make our services accessible to everyone, transport assistance and home visits may be available for families with limited transport or additional needs.


Healthy4Life

The Healthy for Life Program objectives are to:

  1. Improve the availability of child and maternal health care
  2. Improvement in the prevention, early detection and management of chronic diseases
  3. Improve the long term health outcome of Indigenous Australians

The Healthy for Life team offer a broad range of services to support the local community including full ante natal, maternal and child health and chronic disease support.

How we can Help?

Dietitian

The dietitian provides initial consultation, dietary assessments, education, planning and review for clients. Health promotional activities for schools, pre-schools and community groups.

Antenatal Care (ANC)

Antenatal Care (ANC) is provided through the Healthy for Life Program and in partnership with Swift St Medical Centre.

Our Senior Aboriginal Health Practitioner works closely with expectant mothers to ensure they receive consistent, culturally safe care throughout their pregnancy. Transport and additional support are available for WACHS clients to attend the weekly antenatal clinic, as well as any required follow-up appointments.

Our goal is to make antenatal care accessible, supportive, and stress-free for mothers and families in our community

Health Checks

Health checks are provided to both adults and children and are commenced by staff with the G.P. completing this assessment. Health Checks are conducted not only in the centre but as an outreach service for schools, preschools and at promotion activities.

Maternal and Child Health

This position provides direct patient care and clinical support in the area of Maternal and Child Health 5 days per week.

The service offers a range of essential supports for families, including immunisations, dental health advice, developmental and maternal screening, as well as guidance on parenting, settling, and behavioural management.

Through a supportive and culturally safe approach, the role helps promote the health, wellbeing, and development of mothers and children in the community

Mums and Bubs Group

In partnership with SEWB, the Healthy for Life and New Directions Team proudly run a fortnightly Mums and Bubs Group for mothers and babies in Wellington.

The group runs all year round and offers a relaxed, supportive space where families can connect, learn, and have fun. Each session includes a variety of activities, education, and visiting services, giving mums the opportunity to gain helpful information while spending quality time with their babies.
