Aboriginal Art Competition

- Monday, September 17, 2018

The Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS) organisation invites all secondary schools in the Wellington and Dubbo Local Government area, to design the cover of our 2018 Annual Report.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary school children aged from 11 years to 18 years of age are encouraged to design an artwork that reflects the local Indigenous culture and history of the area. The winning entry will best reflect this in their artwork and story.

Darren Ah See, CEO of WACHS said, “This is a great opportunity for the local schools to be involved in a competition that benefits the individuals and schools. It is also a great opportunity for our organisation to be involved locally in the high schools.”

Artists are invited to submit their artwork for the 2018 WACHS Annual Report cover and the winning artwork will be used to create the front and back cover of the report which is distributed state wide.

The winner will receive a $200.00 gift card for their entry and an additional $500.00 gift card provided to the school art department to purchase artwork supplies. The artist will also receive a credit and a photo in the front inside cover of the Annual Report. They will also have the opportunity to see their artwork come to life throughout the graphic design process that is undertaken.

All entries must be accompanied by a signed and completed Entry Form including design story by 5 pm on 5th October 2018. Entry limit of one entry per artist and no late entries will be considered. Entry forms and the terms and conditions for the competition are below.

Miimi Program

- Wednesday, August 29, 2018

In an historic partnership, Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Services (WACHS) will join with Wellington High School during term three to run the highly effective Miimi Girls Program – an initiative aimed at helping educate young local Indigenous women.

The project’s aim is to empower, support and ensure self-pride in all areas of life, whether it be through personal hygiene, mental health, culture and mentoring support.

“WACHS is committed to working in our local community and in particular with our female members. The Miimi Program will allow the girls to see that they can make better choices and be better educated on the options available to them and their families”, said Chief Executive Officer, Darren Ah See.

“We are excited to have ‘Our Miimi Program’ start here at Wellington High School. We recognised that there is a need for a unique girls program within our community where our young girls can come to school, feel safe, connected and supported all while learning basic life skills, advised the Indigenous Support Staff.”

The Indigenous Support Team from Wellington High School said: “We are also looking forward to having many inspirational women and elders from our community on board which will help guide and mentor our girls throughout the program – this is crucial for the passing down of invaluable knowledge and to help our girls build positive connections within our community.”

The girls will undertake significant components of the program including social media, presentation and make up, leadership, sexual health, resume writing, culture, drugs and alcohol.

WACHS celebrate 25 year milestone

- Monday, November 13, 2017

“From little things big things grow.”

That is what founding member of the Wellington Aboriginal Corporation Health Service (WACHS), Aunty Joyce Williams, said to herself 25 years ago when the service was launched.

It has certainly been the case for the organisation which flourished over the last two decades to now service locations across the state.

The milestone was celebrated with the help of community members, ambassadors and services at Pioneer Park on Friday – a sight to behold for Aunty Joyce who reminisced on the service’s early days.
